What's wrong with the battery?
Tesla has identified certain lithium-ion battery cells from a third-party supplier in a subset of Powerwall 2 systems that may fail and overheat. Tesla has received reports of affected units smoking or emitting flames, resulting in minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.
The fault is in the battery cells, not in the installation. Tesla checks each battery individually by its serial number, so not every Powerwall 2 sold in the recall period is affected.
Tesla Motors Australia issued the voluntary recall through the ACCC on 16 September 2025. It was updated on 13 April 2026 to extend the sale dates, and on 12 August 2026 to advise owners to contact their installer to schedule a replacement.
